North Alpine Trail 01 Variant: Stages 1 to 5 (Burgenland Route)
Since its conception in 1975, the North Alpine Long-distance Trail 01 has led passionate hikers across Austria, from lake to lake through almost all provinces. To be more precise, the route runs for almost 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) from Lake Neusiedl or the Vienna Woods in the east, through the northern limestone peaks of the Eastern Alps to Lake Constance in the west. This is an adventure that brings together the most beautiful alpine scenes in Austria, and it’s one you won’t forget in a hurry.
In this Collection, I show you how to tackle the first Austrian high-altitude transversal through the Alps, from Lake Neusiedl rather than the classic start point in the Vienna Woods. Once you’ve conquered the lake, you head through the provinces of Lower Austria, Styria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, before finishing at the spectacular Lake Constance.
Starting in the city of Rust, you experience the many wonderful facets of the rather underrated province of Burgenland, making your way past castles and other historic buildings, through the Bucklige Welt known as the ‘land of 1000 hills’ and over the Semmering Pass to the Karl Ludwig House, where the route meets the classic trail from Vienna.
You can lengthen or shorten the stages as you wish, depending on your fitness level. You should reserve your accommodation at the respective stage destinations in advance to ensure you have a warm bed at night.
