A historic old town, excellent wines, fantastic views, the finest porcelain, culture, history and a well-developed hiking network: Meißen in Saxony's Elbland region has it all.
So that you can explore Meißen and the surrounding area on foot, we’ve put together six thematically contrasting circular Tours that will introduce you to the distinctive features of the area. From a leisurely 2-kilometre (1.2 mi) walk through the magnificent old town of Meißen to a 7-kilometre (4.3 mi) Tour through the romantic vineyards of the Spaargebirge with stunning views, everything is included.
Wine is the theme at the forefront of three of the Tours. You hike along a well-developed network of hiking trails through wildly romantic forests, over vineyards and along flower-filled Elbe meadows. Often a vantage point with a magnificent view of the distinctive cultural landscape invites you to linger. You hike over gentle hills, imposing steep cliffs of red granite and natural river banks. In one of the many taverns, you can be pampered by friendly innkeepers and sample Saxon wine to your heart's content.
Another Tour with a porcelain theme takes you to St. Nicholas Church with its unique furnishings, while the culture Tour leads you along hidden, historical paths to the cultural and historical highlights of Meissen. On the nature trail through the city forest, you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the five surrounding protected landscape areas as well as about their fauna, flora, history and geology.
Let yourself be surprised by the diversity and special features of the Meissen region on your hikes. And don't forget your camera, because the impressive perspectives of the 1,000-year-old city that await you at every turn are a stunning motif.
