Red and yellow vine leaves compete with the colourful forest. Nature once again displays all its vibrant splendour before going into hibernation. Now, under the last warming rays of autumn sunshine, you can go on the most beautiful Tours of the year. In Thurgau, you can sweeten this time with a glass or two of wine while enjoying the view over the shimmering Lake Constance or letting your gaze roam over the Alpine peaks, already inviting the first snows.

Autumn is the perfect time for a wine hike. The season goes wonderfully with a good glass of Pinot Noir or, of course, a local Müller-Thurgau. This vine likes to grow on the southern slopes of the Thurgau mountain ranges. If the weather is not quite ideal, the wine will warm you from the inside. High above the Thurtal, you can explore the Iselisberg or set off from Weinfelden on a humid hike with cups in your backpack. You can also take a beautiful Tour between the vines on the shores of the Untersee lake and enjoy the fantastic views over the water.

The riverbanks in Thurgau are also ideal for autumn hikes. You can walk along the Thur, get to know the Murg or combine the route along the Rhine with a boat trip. And then, of course, there are other lakes to discover in Thurgau besides the gigantic Lake Constance: Lake Nussbaum and Lake Hüttwil in the Seebach valley are particularly idyllic.

There are many pubs and restaurants to choose from along the way. And almost everywhere you can take a break at a public barbecue and warm yourself by a fire. There are cultural highlights aplenty too: many of the hikes can be combined with a tour of a historic village centre, a visit to a castle or a museum.

If a wine hike is on the agenda, it’s definitely preferable to arrive by public transport. Fortunately, this isn’t a problem in Thurgau: the region is very well connected and many long-distance hikes can be combined with a relaxing train ride or a scenic boat trip.

An enjoyable themed trail leads through the vineyards on the Untersee. It tells of the history of viticulture on Lake Constance, including Hermann Müller, to whom we owe the Müller-Thurgau.
