The ViaRhôna is an unforgettable adventure and cycle route that follows the course of the Rhône River from Switzerland and the Alps to Montpellier or Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône. This magnificent 815-kilometre (506 mi) journey is a great trip for cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, combining spectacular scenery, unique cuisine and a dose of the good life.

Over 18 stages, this Collection takes you through various regions, from the Alps to the Mediterranean. It passes through the renowned vineyards of the Rhône Valley, the exquisite Provence, and historic cities such as Lyon, Avignon and Arles.
Along the way, you'll discover breathtaking, sparsely populated landscapes, cycle along the banks of the Rhône and pass through untouched nature, lavender and olive groves, picturesque vineyards and hilltop villages.

If you love nature, you'll be delighted by the many regional nature parks close to the route: Haut-Jura, Massif des Bauges, Pilat, Vercors, Monts d'Ardèche, Baronnies provençales, Luberon, Alpilles and Camargue. These offer superb opportunities for hiking and other outdoor activities.

The ViaRhôna isn't just about nature; it's also a cultural adventure. You'll visit historic sites like the ancient theatres of Lyon, Vienne and Orange, imposing châteaux like Château de Grignan and Château de Tarascon, and UNESCO World Heritage monuments.
The capital of cuisine, Lyon, and its historic UNESCO centre, is a must-see, too. Avignon, famous for its Palace of the Popes, and Vienne, Orange and Arles, famous for their Roman remains, are also excellent stops in the Rhône Valley. The ViaRhôna covers more than 2,000 years of history and rich heritage. It's a real journey through time.

After your stopover in Arles, you can head for the heart of Montpellier and the friendly atmosphere of Sète, or finish your Tour on a quiet beach in the Camargue.

The ViaRhôna is accessible to all abilities, whether you're a family, a group of friends or an experienced rider. You’ll mainly follow greenways and safe cycle paths. Along the way, you'll find bike hire services, railway stations, villages and towns where you can eat out, discover local specialities and places to spend the night. There's something for everyone, from campsites to luxury hotels and guest houses.

To reach Geneva, take the train to the Cornavin station. You'll find many TGV stations en route, so you can also choose another departure point, such as Lyon, Valence, Montélimar or Avignon.

So, are you ready to embark on this unique adventure? The ViaRhôna reveals the beauty of the Rhône and the surrounding area. See you on the road!

The first day takes you in several sections from the basin of Lake Geneva up to the foot of the "Montagne de Vuache". It's always a bit uphill, followed by a short ride back down into the valley. That would be pretty grueling in the long run, but luckily it's done after three climbs.

Today's route takes you along one of the most spectacular landscapes of the ViaRhôna: On the northern flank of the “Montagne de Vuache” you pass the “Le Défilé de l'Ecluse” needle eye and, together with the Rhône, break through the first and highest mountain range in France Jura along their way.

From Seyssel, you first walk comfortably along the Rhone until a short but crisp ascent over a main road awaits you at the mouth of the "Fier". There is a hard shoulder marked for cyclists, but it is not even a meter wide and actually only deserves the name cycle path thanks to the signs on the roadside

After a leisurely start to the day, about seven kilometers behind Belley, you turn for a brief moment into the valley of the "vieux Rhône", which breaks through the Jura again here. As scenic as this section is, you should be careful here and concentrate well on the road despite the overwhelming view

Today is all about caves and underground passages. So if it is one of those typically hot summer days in France, you will find enough opportunities on this stage to cool off a bit underground.

The land is now becoming increasingly flatter and the mountains are also saying goodbye to the horizon. Meanwhile, the Rhone is finally finding its way into the vastness of the valley to which the Upper Rhine Graben also belongs geologically. From now on, it will follow this plain as far as the Mediterranean

The seventh stage takes you on the outskirts of the suburbs of Lyon after only a few kilometers into the forest and lake landscape of the “Miribel-Jonage” park. Since today's total route is quite short at just over 30 kilometers, you have enough time to explore this green oasis at the gates of Lyon.
