Have you ever felt the urge to go outside, to escape the daily grind, get yourself out of a rut, and go on an adventure in the outdoors? Often, spending one or two hours in your nearby forest is not enough. But, a real adventure is never far away. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, there are several day Tours that take you on a daypacking adventure with plenty of distance and altitude metres in the heart of wild nature.
Moors, lakes, forests and mountains – you can experience almost everything in western Germany. You discover the High Fens on the Belgian border, Taunus Schinderhannes Steig climb and the region of Kroppach Switzerland. In the low mountain regions of the Eifel, Sauerland, Taunus and Westerwald, you find all kinds of opportunities for exciting day hikes far away from any big cities and tourist trails. In this Collection, we show you eight exhilarating hikes that are between 20 to 30 kilometres (12.5 to 18.6 miles) long each. You can reach the starting points by bus, train or car. It’s worth travelling a bit longer to get to all of the Tours.
All daypacking adventures have one thing in common – you should start your hike well prepared with the right equipment. Due to the length of the Tours, it’s best to start in the cooler hours of the morning and always hike towards the sun. This means that layered clothing is a good idea too.
You should also always have enough water and snacks with you as there are no rest stops on many sections. Besides, a picnic in nature is part of a real outdoor adventure, isn’t it? Therefore, you need a sufficiently large hiking rucksack. We recommend a volume of 15 to 30 litres so you have space to comfortably store everything. Top tip: the Speed Lite 26 model or the Speed Lite 22 SL model for women will have enough space for your adventures. You might even end up putting your hiking boots in your rucksack as it’s not uncommon to go barefoot in the Eifel between hikes.
If you're feeling adventurous, why not pick a suitable Tour for your next day hike and take a break from everyday life? The Eifel, the Westerwald, the Taunus and the Sauerland await you with wonderful nature, spectacular views and plenty of challenges.

Alpine feeling in the west: rocky climbs and narrow ridge paths await you on this day tour around the small town of Roßbach and the Wiedtal in the heart of the Westerwald. One of the demanding sections of the route on this tour is the Anxbacher Höhenweg. Almost forgotten and somewhat overgrown, it meanders over a mountain ridge above the Anxbach of the same name.
At the beginning there is the forest and at the end the castle towers: This is the best way to describe the Schinderhannes-Steig between Altweilnau and Eppstein in the Taunus low mountain range. The climb was named after the robber Johannes Bückler, nicknamed "Schinderhannes", who used the wooded low mountain range as a retreat a long time ago. The Schinderhannes leads you from the inhabited areas into the untouched nature to his favorite hiding places.
