Herring and seascapes – discover the Baltic Schlei around Kappeln by bike
With its idyllic harbour, romantic old town and beautiful landscapes, Kappeln is a special town on the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei. On your bike, you can cover a lot of distance in one day and explore the unique places in Schleswig-Holstein, a region in the north of Germany.
In this Collection, we present two exciting Tours on which you can get to know Kappeln in depth. What springs to mind when you think of the Baltic Sea and fishing? Fresh herring, of course! On one of the Tours, you learn everything about Kappeln’s history as a fishing town, visit the last herring fence in Europe and breathe in the salty sea air.
On the second Tour, you discover the locations of one of the most successful series on ZDF - Der Landarzt. In the series, the place is called ‘Deekelsen’. Don’t worry if you haven’t watched it yet. Even if you don’t know much about the show, you’ll definitely be inspired to tune in after your holiday to be reminded of your wonderful time in Kappeln. By the way, be careful – there’s a big danger of falling in love with this Baltic Sea idyll and wanting to return at all costs.
The centre of Kappeln itself has a lot to offer and can easily keep you busy for a day or two. The town is nestled amongst beautiful hilly landscapes directly along the Schlei River not far from the Baltic Sea. From Kiel, it takes about 40 minutes to get to Kappeln by car or you can take the train.
A small harbour town, Kappeln is also known for its bascule bridge, which rises once an hour during the day. You can get to the town centre and harbour’s edge directly from the bridge. Kappeln is a lovely place to spend a day strolling through the old town, visiting the museum harbour, enjoying a tasty fish snack and taking a ride on a paddle steamer. If you love the Baltic Sea and its charming villages, you’ll enjoy this town.
Enjoy a journey across land and water and tuck into a fish sandwich – we hope you have an unforgettable holiday.
