Surrounded by rolling hills, the idyllic harbour town of Kappeln lies just before the mouth of the 42-kilometre (26 mi) long Baltic Sea Schlei fjord. Its location makes it a good starting point for exploring the nature along the Schlei River and the Baltic Sea beaches are not far away. In this Collection, we show you three particularly beautiful walks around Kappeln that have an extra pinch of Baltic Sea charm. You explore the fields along the Schlei and hike past windmills and thatched house, visit the smallest town in Germany – Arnis – and catch a paddle boat from Kappeln to Maasholm.
Kappeln itself also has a lot to offer: Stroll along the harbour promenade and watch the fishermen at work in the harbour; stop at one of the cosy restaurants or small cafes; and visit the Föh fish smokehouse that offers smoked eel and salmon as well as other delicacies. We also recommend visiting the bascule bridge which offers great views over the herring fences in the Schlei. The remnants of this historic fishing method are considered the last of its kind in Europe and they are the landmark of the city. Some of you may also recognise the city from television. The ZDF series ‘Der Landarzt’, starring Wayne Carpendale, was filmed here until 2012.
You can round off your stay with a trip to Weidefelder Strand beach, where you can breathe in the Baltic Sea air and go for a swim. Or perhaps you’d rather visit the museum harbour and Schlei Museum to learn more about the region’s history. The surrounding Schlei Nature Park is a biodiverse natural paradise with a mix of freshwater, brackish and saltwater habitats that provide a home for many bird species. Whatever you decide, you are guaranteed a varied trip at the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei.
