Fairytale moated castles with extensive parks, magnificent baroque buildings and imposing sandstone palaces with exquisite gardens – there are countless treasures to discover in Münsterland along the 100 Castles Route. This picturesque region in northwestern Germany offers over 600 miles (960 km) of cycling paths through picturesque landscapes characterised by green meadows, rolling pastures, woodland, and hedge-lined roads.
In this Collection, we guide you along the entire 100 Castles Route in four circulars: West, North, East and South. The easiest place to start the West route is from the city of Coesfeld, which has a train station. The other three routes start from Münster’s central station. The circulars sometimes overlap so you can combine them together to ride the entire route.
On each of the loops, beautiful scenery and stunning history awaits. On the five-stage west route, you visit Anholt moated castle and Raesfeld Castle. On the north route, you discover the hilly landscape of the Tecklenburger Land over six stages, visiting Steinfurt and Bentheim castles. More castles await of the east course, which takes you to Loburg and Harkotten castles during its four stages. Finally, on the south course, you will be impressive by Westerwinkel and Nordkirchen castle as you explore the area to the south of Münster over four stages.
Regardless of which of the routes you choose, you will find accommodation, restaurants, cafés and often train stations en route and at end destinations making it easy to shorten your ride or skip out some sections. There are countless castles and palaces to discover so keep your eyes peeled and enjoy the treasures of Münsterland!
