A bridge that lifts when you want to cross it? A tiny ferry that can barely carry a few people but your bike will definitely fit aboard? The inland region of Schleswig-Holstein at the gates of Hamburg has so many wonderful surprises in store for you. This region between the Elbe and the Auenland has its very own character and is perfect for day trips by bike.
To help you on your adventures – whether on a touring bike or an e-bike – we’ve put together 14 fascinating and family-friendly circular Tours. They range between 30 and 83 kilometres (19 - 52 mi) long and lead you to beautiful villages, cultural highlights and historical sites. Time and again you’ll find tasty restaurants, charming dairies and farm shops where you can enjoy local specialities.
All Tours can be reached by train either at the very start or nearby, at a town along the route. The larger surrounding towns with bigger train stations include Hamburg, Neumünster and Elmshorn.
The varied and beautiful natural landscape north of Bad Bramstedt will cast a spell over you. On this 36-kilometer round you drive through the Shire with its pretty villages and characteristic landscape. Although there are several rest stops along the way, you will find many wonderful places to relax and linger. We therefore recommend that you pack something to eat and drink and use the beautiful places for a quiet picnic.
On this round tour you will find alluvial valleys, forests, hilly geest landscapes and small towns with magnificent farms. On the 54-kilometer route you will pass a farm road by the fish ponds, which can only be used during business hours. You can call up the transit times at fischzucht-knutzen.de. At all other times, you can alternatively take the K 32 to Mühlenbarbek, where you will meet the planned route again.

The Stör is the largest tributary of the Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein and on this beautiful tour you accompany it from Kellinghusen to the mouth of the Elbe at Wewelsfleth and back again. If you prefer to make a two-day tour out of it and give the many highlights along the way a little more time, Itzehoe is the ideal starting point. From there you can start an upstream and a downstream tour.
