The very first edition of Grinduro! Wales was just the jam-packed weekend of Maxin' & Relaxin' we hoped for.

After settling into camp in Machynlleth on the Friday night, Saturday was marked by two awesome routes, one in the morning, and then one in the afternoon, with a social interlude at Grinduro HQ in between for a much-needed rest and refuelling on some delicious pasta!

The morning ride took us to the north, on quiet lanes and cycle tracks towards the beautiful village of Corris, before heading up the long gravel track into the heart of the Dyfi Forest. Here, endless dusty gravel roads, slate-filled singletrack trails, grassy moorland tracks and a delicious fruit and nut butter feedstation courtesy of Outdoor Provisions awaited us. Two timed sections tested riders, including the long, steep climb up Fedw-lwyd and a singletrack MTB segment.

We headed to the south of Machynlleth for the afternoon ride, a deceptively short, but very hilly route twisting, turning and climbing through the hills. There was a little more singletrack on this leg, with some of the Mach XC trails included on this route, steep chutes and even an enduro-style finish, straight down off the hills and into the Grinduro HQ arena!

Greeted with bright sunshine, it was time to put the well-loved Grinduro party into action, with an evening of delicious food, drink and live music.

We rolled out on the Sunday for komoot's 'Hangover Ride', with fifty or so riders keen to explore more of the hills to the south of Machynlleth on the Mach 1 XC loop. You'll find this route here in this Collection, so you can go and ride it yourself. As the routes from the Saturday included sections of private land, we've included some of the route Highlights here, so you can plan your own Tours that can be ridden year-round.

Intermediate gravel ride. Good fitness required. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

Sunday's 'Hangover Ride' with komoot followed the established Mach 1 trail, put together and maintained by the local Beicio Mynydd Dyfi MTB group.

The Mach MTB trails were first established in 2001, with the popular Climachx trail added later in 2005. This shortest, and least technical trail is awesome for gravel riding as we know it today as well as …

    The grassy hill up Fedw-lwyd

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

A long, grassy climb over the moorland above Dyfi Forest up to the peak of Fedw-lwyd that featured as the first timed segment of Grinduro! Wales 2021.

Turning the first corner from the segment start, you could see the riders up ahead on the snaking track that winds up the hillside, dodging between runs and grassy tussocks as they battled legs and lungs on this steep ascent.

If you can distract yourself from the burn for a second, the views of the neighbouring valleys from up here is just incredible.

    Valley balcony gravel track

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The most spectacular balcony road along the valley side with gorgeous views and often circle around you. There's a mix of grassy climb, wide gravel doubletrack and a few gates through a woodland, but all brilliant fun and dusty in the dry!

The track is part of the Mach 1 mountain biking loop, but is also great on a gravel bike or sturdy tourer.

Grass up the middle gravel climb

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

This bridleway around the peak of Commins Pant-glâs heads off the lane and up a glorious gravel double track with grass up the middle.

You'll find it on some of the XC Mach MTB loops but it's also awesome on a gravel bike. It was part of the 2021 Grinduro! Wales course too.

It's a leg burner but at least there's some awesome views to distract you.

    Glorious gravel

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

Turn off the road, over the cattle grid and onto prime gravel roads, up and around the corners into the hill south of Machynlleth.

This gravel track leads to the most incredible balcony road in the valley. It features in several of the Mach MTB XC trails and was also used for the Grinduro! Wales 2021 course and hangover ride.

Gravel or mountain bike, this trail is ace.

    Slate drop

    Bike Touring Highlight

A fairly challenging, loose slate steep that featured in the Grinduro! Wales 2021 course. If it's not your cuppa, there's an easier B-line to the right down around the grass side of the hill back onto the singletrack.

    Better Late Than Never

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

This single track section runs parallel to the main forest road, so could be easily skipped if you wanted, but I would recommend riding it! There's a short climb to start but otherwise it's pretty fun, with a few ramps to pop off and some small rock drops.

This singletrack section made the second timed segment in the morning for the 2021 Grinduro! Wales course. This section of the ClimachX trail leads into Where's My Ball before Tony The Tiger to finish the loop.

    Llyfnant forested descent

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

From east to west, this is a marvellous rocky, loose descent through the forest alongside the Llynfnant, that features both on the Mach 1 XC loop and the multi-day Trans Cambrian Way.

With dappled light through the trees in strong sunlight and some small roots and ruts to navigate, it's an absolute blast on gravel bikes and mountain bikes alike, and goes on much longer than you'd expect!

    Steep slate chute!

    Bike Touring Highlight

Through the gate and down you go: this is a really narrow, steep and slate-paved singletrack heading straight down the hillside with views of the opposite valley side ahead.

The track features on the Mach 2 and Mach 3 MTB XC trails (you'll see the waymarkers on the gate), but also on the gravel-bike orientated Grinduro! Wales 2021 route.

    Corris gravel climb

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

This is a gravel climb that just keeps giving! It's part of the Mach MTB trails up from Corris and Machynlleth, and really does go on and on, so pace yourself and take your time, you're in it for the long haul!

A section of the climb featured as the bonus stage on the Grinduro! Wales 2021 course, hosted by SRAM/Zipp.

    Long winding gravel smash

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

There's plenty of beautiful hard-packed doubletrack gravel roads in Dyfi Forest: it's not just about the MTB singletracks that's for sure!

This made up part of the Grinduro! Wales 2021 course, although not a timed segment.
