You will forget the number of lakes you pass whilst cycling through the Franconian Lake District in Germany. Located just south of Nuremberg, this region’s countless lakes are a special treat for water addicts and nature lovers. In this Collection, we present six of the region’s seven lakes to reveal the Franconian Lake District from its most beautiful sides. You can choose from 10 different routes which lead you along idyllic riverbanks and to the medieval towns of Abenberg, Weißenburg, and Wolframs-Eschenbach, with plenty of swimming breaks along the way.

Much of the Franconian Lake District was artificially created as a water-management project, aside from the Great Brombach Lake, the largest lake in the region. Planning for the area began in the mid-1960s and it was completed by the turn of the new millennium. Today, you can follow a network of cycle paths through the varied landscape which is fun for the whole family. In this Collection, you will find routes for all abilities, ranging from challenging full-day rides to relaxed circulars. We also reveal the region’s most beautiful swimming spots, wild river valleys, and historic towns en route.

From Nuremberg, you can easily reach the Franconian Lake District by train. At the lakes, you will find tranquil spots where nature conservation is a priority, as well as lively areas with developed infrastructure. During your trip, you can spend the night at a campsite or in one of the villages. At some of the lakes, you can swap your bike for a boat or surfboard and swap land for water. There is a lot to discover in the Franconian Lake District — we wish you lots of fun!
