Spring is here! The days are getting warmer and longer, nature is awakening and your bike is ready – it’s time to finally set off on adventures. You’ll find the perfect Tour for your next cycling journey here. In Franconia, two beautiful cycle paths join to form the Tauber Altmühl Cycle Path. From the River Main, the route winds along the Tauber River and onto the Altmühl and Danube. You pass through beautiful landscapes and romantic half-timbered towns. The first part of the Tauber Altmühl Cycle Route follows the five-star ‘Liebliches Taubertal – Classic’ cycle route. From the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you then switch onto the breathtakingly beautiful Altmühltal cycle path.

We planned the 350-kilometre (217 mi) cycle path in seven stages in this Collection. You set off along the Tauber Altmühl Cycle Path in Wertheim. This castle town on the Main and Tauber Rivers is easy to reach by train or via the MainRadweg (komoot.com/collection/1088745).

From Wertheim, you cycle through the charming Tauber Valley, passing cultural highlights such as the Bronnbach Monastery and the Toppler Palace and visiting towns such as Weikersheim, Bad Mergentheim, Eichstätt and, of course, the medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The cycle path leaves the Tauber here and leads through the picturesque Frankenhöhe Nature Park to the headwaters of the Altmühl. Along the river, the cycle path winds its way into the Franconian Lake District to the impressively beautiful Altmühlsee. From here, you continue along the Altmühl to Kelheim, passing highlights such as the dry slopes near Dollnstein and countless castles perched high above the valley on impressive cliffs.

In Kelheim, the final stop of your cycle Tour, you can return home by train from Saal an der Donau, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) away. Alternatively, you can catch a bus with a bicycle trailer from spring until autumn. Of course, you can also continue cycling along the Danube cycle path. The Tauber Altmühl Cycle Path is ideal for families as it is almost entirely flat. And thanks to the good public transport connections, you can also plan day Tours or short trips along the route, as all stage destinations can be reached by public transport.
