Austria's largest biking region has thrown down the gauntlet to cyclists this summer with an epic 96 kilometre (59.6 mi) challenge. The goal is to bike through the mountain world between the towns of Saalbach Hinterglemm, Fieberbrunn and Leogang – in one day.

You can save on some metres of climbing thanks to the mountain lifts, but this is still an undertaking that demands everything from you. Many challenging single tracks await you, especially downhill. In addition to the classics around Saalbach Hinterglemm and Leogang, such as the Hacklberg Trail and X-Line, the newly built Schweinsberg Trail in Fieberbrunn is also part of the route.

Want to take on this challenge? Here's how it works:

You can start the challenge from anywhere along the route. With the help of the komoot route planner, it’s easy to adjust the starting point. Simply open the Tour on your computer, select ‘Edit a copy of this Tour’ and then click ‘Select starting point’ to change it. You can then follow the route from your new start line. It’s up to you how you design the downhills and lifts. The important thing is that you use all of the cable cars listed in the route proposal and thus guarantee your place on the Skiline.cc results list. The recommended lift order from the respective starting points can be found here (in German language only): saalbach.com/de/sommer/mountainbiken/THE-CHALLENGE-Bike-your-limit.

As a reward for your performance, we’ll gift you a water bottle. You just have to hand in the original print out of your altimeter chart from the Skiline terminal at one of the main cash desks at the end of the Tour.

All successful ‘challengers’ who register at Skiline.cc and make it into the Hall of Fame also have the chance of winning great prizes. The winners will be drawn at random at the end of the season:

1st prize: 1 x 1 week vacation in Austria's largest bike region including bike tickets.
2nd prize: 2 x bike tickets for one week
3rd prize: 3 x 3 bike tickets for one day

You can take on the challenge until 10th October 2021. Some of the mountain railways close before 10th October 2021 in which case you can use these alternatives:

From 12th September, use the Asitzbahn twice instead of taking the Steinbergbahn. From 26th September, use the Westgipfelbahn instead of the Schattberg X-press and the Schattberg Sprinter.

So let's get going! ‘THE CHALLENGE - Bike your Limit’ in Austria's largest bike region is waiting to be conquered by you.

Expert mountain bike ride. Very good fitness required. Advanced riding skills necessary. Some portions of the Tour may require you to push your bike.

From Saalbach you start “THE CHALLENGE - Bike your Limit” with the Schattberg X-press up to the Schattberg-Ostgipfel. On the X-Line or alternatively the forest road, it goes down to the Schattberg Sprinter, which takes you to the west summit. Now the Hacklberg Trail is an absolute highlight of the tour. On the flowing Buchegg Trail, you then complete the further descent meters down to Hinterglemm.

    Erster Abschnitt vom Hacklberg-Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

Always loved and often ridden - the Hacklberg Trail. Especially when I started, I found this trail to be just perfect and immediately felt comfortable and safe on the bike. The small route marks the first 300 meters of the flow trail. Immediately afterwards you can also turn onto the more demanding Bergstadl Trail. If you have the feeling that you are really safe on trails like the Hacklberg, you can dare to go to the next level.

    Buchegg Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The Buchegg Trail is an extension of the Bergstadl or the famous Hacklberg Trail. It starts right at the middle station of the gondola, where the Bergstadl ends. The trail is super flowy and easy. Also made for beginners. The path meanders along the meadow slope in a curvy and fun way and the Buchegg does not lack built-in small Northshore elements and tables or waves. An all-round great descent.

    Z-Line

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The Z-Line is a very varied route with fantastic views and is located directly at the middle station of the Zwölferkogelbahn. A wonderful trail that offers numerous berms, waves, wall rides, northshore elements as well as tables and smaller drops - but always with a detour - so that you can slowly approach the route.

    Blue-Line

    Mountain Biking Highlight

A very flowing and simple single trail on the Reiterkogel, which is also very suitable for beginners. With many simple banked curves, flat Northshore elements, waves and wide tables - but which can also just be rolled over - the varied descent offers great fun and beautiful views of the Hintere Glemmtal.

    Panorama Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The Panorama Trail turns Kohlmais into a paradise for mountain bikers, speed junkies and all mountain stylers. From the mountain station, the Panorama Trail winds casually through the forest and winds its way across the green ski slope. Never too steep or too technical and yet sporty enough to take a good ride.

    Einstieg Schweinestberg-Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight

The first official trail in Fieberbrunn is really good fun. For four kilometers, the trail meanders from the Streuböden middle station through the forest down to Fieberbrunn. The trail is not too difficult (S1) and is therefore also suitable for beginners. For all trail lovers, a detour from the Glemmtal to Fieberbrunn is now worthwhile.

    Einstieg Steinberg-Line by FOX

    Mountain Biking Highlight

The Steinberg-Line is an easy-to-ride trail with a lot of berms. Even novice drivers will have a lot of fun here. ;-) Halfway there is a wooden terrace with a view, if the weather is right, a very nice opportunity to take a break.

    Asitz Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight (Segment)

The Asitz Trail is a flowing single trail that is also part of the "BIG-5 Challenge". There are separate paths for bikers and hikers. That means twice as much driving pleasure. By the way, if you want to venture into the BIG-5 Challenge, you can get all the information here: bikepark.saalfelden-leogang.com/de/streckeninfos/big-5-challenge

    Wurzel-Trail

    Mountain Biking Highlight

The root trail goes in the direction of Leogang and is part of the "Big 5 Challenge". Technically, the trail is not without it and when it is wet / rainy it becomes more difficult and more exhausting to make progress!

    Monti-Trail Saalbach

    Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)

The Monti-Trail offers residents, wooden elements and small jumps over three kilometers. The fine surface does not hold any nasty surprises in store, which is why the trail is particularly recommended for freeride beginners. The view of Saalbach Hinterglemm is also pleasing!
