Right now, Franconia is in hibernation, but as soon as spring all cycling routes and hiking trails are ready to be explored. One of our most beautiful cycling routes: the Regnitz Cycle Path. Surrounded by Franconian Switzerland’s hills, the Steigerwald and the southern Haßbergen, the cycle path runs between Nuremberg and Bischberg, near Bamberg. Green meadows and luscious riverbanks accompany as you ride. You’ll also encounter rich history and culture along the way as you visit historic waterwheels, locks and ancient towns. The Regnitz Cycle Path is the stuff cycling dreams are made of.
You can choose between two options when you ride the Regnitz Cycle Path which can also be combined to make a loop. The 52-mile (85-km) valley route takes you along the Regnitz River. On the way you will pass picturesque villages and towns such as Fürth, Erlangen and Forchheim. The second option is the 45-mile (73-km) long canal route which runs directly along the Main-Danube Canal.
In this Collection, we show you both routes, combined to a loop from Nuremberg. Covering 100 miles (160 km), we’ve split the route into four stages. In all stage destinations you will find different accommodation options to suit any budget and a railway station. The Regnitz cycle path is the most beautiful during the warm summer months when you can enjoy your breaks in quaint beer gardens and cozy terraces, indulging in Franconian specialties.

The first stage of the Regnitz cycle path begins in Nuremberg at Wöhrder See and leads you on the valley route to Forchheim. The lake is not far from the Nuremberg train station, which you can reach by both local and long-distance trains. At Wöhrder See you will also find a beautiful city beach, if you still feel like cooling off briefly and swimming a bit before the bike tour.As soon as you get on your bike, you cycle along the banks of the Pegnitz, which takes you out of Nuremberg and takes you straight to Fürth. Beautiful parks and vast meadows accompany you on many sections. The Fegnitz and the Rednitz merge into the Regnitz, which you now follow northwards. In some places you cycle directly along the shore and can enjoy the view of the water. Most of the time, however, you drive through wide meadows and beautiful forests a little off the river. Shortly before Erlangen you turn to the Main-Danube Canal and follow the straight bank for a short distance. Between Alterlangen and Erlangen you cycle through the meadows of the Regnitz again. Over the meadows you have a beautiful view of Erlangen, which is not far away. If you feel like it, you can make a detour to the beautiful city.Behind Alterlangen you will be greeted by picturesque nature with vast fields and romantic forests. On the flat, well-paved bike path it almost goes by itself and you can enjoy the beautiful landscape to the fullest. On the way you will pass beautiful swimming lakes in Oberndorf and Baiersdorf, which invite you to take a refreshing break. Then you cycle back to the Main-Danube Canal, which takes you to the stage destination Forchheim, where you can enjoy the old town with its pretty half-timbered houses.
On the second stage the valley route of the RegnitzRadweg takes you from Forchheim to Bischberg near Bamberg. If you have not seen so much of Forchheim the day before, it's worth paying a visit to the old town before the tour. You can discover such great relics as the fish boxes on the Wiesent. After leaving Forchheim, you'll cycle through beautiful open fields, driving here and there along shady forest edges. Even small charming places with pretty half-timbered houses are on the way. Here you can not only stroll comfortably through the old town centers and in beautiful restaurants and cafes, but in Buttenheim for example, visit the Levi Strauss Museum, where you will learn all about the inventor of jeans. At Pettstadt, you will take a rustic ferry to the other side of the Regnitz and then cycle through wide meadows and fields that stretch between the river and the Main-Danube Canal. At the gates of Bamberg you follow the Regnitz through an idyllic park into the city. You cycle past some of Bamberg's most beautiful corners and can admire the old town hall or the fishing settlement "Little Venice" from the bike. Shortly before you leave Bamberg, the Regnitz flows into the Main-Danube Canal, on whose banks you cycle to Bischberg, the stage destination. Here the canal flows into the Main and you have completed the valley route and thus the first half of the Regnitz cycle path. The next two stages will take you back to Nuremberg on the canal route. But now you can celebrate the halftime and make yourself comfortable in Bischberg or the nearby Bamberg.Tip: If you do not have enough time to cycle back to Nuremberg, you can also take the train in Bamberg.

On the canal route today it goes from Bischberg back to Forchheim. But you do not follow the loop of the Regnitz, but cycle most of the time along the dead straight Main-Donau-Kanal.The first goal of today's stage is Bamberg. In the city you cross the river Regnitz and cycle to the bank of the Main-Danube-Canal. You follow that from the city. As soon as you have left Bamberg behind you, you dive into beautiful nature. Beside you stretch wide fields and lush green meadows. Every now and then you cycle on the absolutely flat track past dense, shady woodland. Right next to you flows straight the canal, which you can follow far into the distance with your eyes. At the lock Strullendorf you cross the Main-Danube Canal and cycle on the other side of the river through equally beautiful landscape of meadows, woods and fields.About halfway the bike path takes you through the town of Hirschaid. Here you can comfortably sit in a beer garden or even take a break in the adventure pool. Behind Hirschaid idyllic nature awaits you on the canal. This time joins the beautiful field, meadow and forest landscape also old river arms and the parallel flowing Regnitz. On the pleasant flat bike path you finally enter the stage destination Forchheim. Here you have another opportunity to visit your favorite spots and let the day fade away in the beautiful old town.
The last stage of the Regnitz cycle path takes you today on the canal route from Forchheim back to Nuremberg. In Forchheim you follow the Main-Danube Canal, which flows past wide fields in a gentle curve. You pass the village of Hausen and finally cycle on a straight section that couldn't be nicer: on the flat bike path you cycle directly along the banks of the canal. You can keep your eyes wandering over the water and over to the other bank. In front of you, the Main-Danube Canal and the bike path run parallel to each other as if drawn with a ruler until they seem to meet on the horizon. Green meadows, wide fields and dense forests line the banks and the bike path on which you ride. Every now and then you come through a place or a lock, where you can take a break and let the goings-on work on you. After Erlangen you leave the bank of the Main-Danube Canal and go back to the route of the valley route. Here you can once again enjoy the most beautiful sections of the outward journey and discover new idyllic spots on the banks of the Pegnitz, which you might not have noticed on the first stage. Following the Pegnitz you cycle into the center of Nuremberg. With a little stroll you have the opportunity to stroll through the market, visit the Imperial Castle or enjoy the historic old town. The end of the stage is the Wöhrder See, where you started your bike tour a few days ago. Here you can end the day on the city beach and take a refreshing dip in the lake. A nice ending, where you have enough time to review the varied cycle tour on the Regnitz cycle path.
