Relaxation for your body, mind and soul in beautiful nature – that’s exactly what you will find in the Odenwald. Sandwiched between the Rhine, Main and Neckar rivers in Hesse, this low mountain range offers you great conditions for extensive hikes. On your forays through nature, you discover mountains with magnificent views, idyllic valleys, dense forests, cosy villages and historical treasures. The Neckar Valley winds through the Odenwald, creating varied landscapes that are perfect for hiking fun. In this Collection, we show you 10 particularly beautiful Tours that bring you closer to the low mountain range, step by step.
The hikes in this Collection are as varied as the region. Depending on your mood, you can choose whether you prefer an ambitious full-day itinerary or a leisurely family Tour. In any case, there is plenty to discover on all the hikes. The routes through Kameralwald forest and up the Katzenbuckel (an extinct volcano that is the highest point in the Odenwald) showcase spectacular views. At 630 metres (2,066 feet), the Katzenbuckel is the highest mountain in the Odenwald and the view from the summit is fantastic. History and castle enthusiasts will enjoy the Wildenburg Trail or the Staufer Circular Mountain Tour. In addition to fantastic nature, there are impressive ruins along the way to explore. The Neckar River flows around 70 kilometres (43 miles) through the Odenwald. You can get to know the landscape shaped by the river between the historic spa town of Bad Wimpfen and Neckargemünd. With a snack in your rucksack and a cosy stop off en route, the hike is even more fun.
The hikes in this Collection are almost all round trips, only the Katzensteig route near Waldbrunn is one-way. Thanks to the region’s well-developed infrastructure, you can return to the start quickly with public transport. You can also reach many starting points of other hikes by train from Heilbronn or Heidelberg. This way, you can set off for an eventful hiking day without any stress.
