‘Come with me!’ calls Willi Basalt, your hiking guide. This friendly rock mascot wants to show you something, ‘we're travelling through Eifel history on foot, it's going to be exciting!’
On the nine themed hiking trails of the History Route around the Hochkelberg mountain, the geological and cultural past of an entire region comes alive. From basalt rocks and wide meadows to deep springs and dark forest paths, you’ll encounter the famous ‘History Road’ and the Eifel of earlier centuries at various info stations. Whether Celts or Romans, simple farmers or noble landowners, across the region are traces of the peoples of yore. See history in half-timbered buildings as well as in the ruins of old farms, bunkers, wells and chapels.
Using more than 70 individual information boards, the themed hiking trails of the History Route present the past and the thoroughly vibrant present of one of Germany's most beautiful regions. Both young and old alike will have their imaginations captured with the region’s incredible human and natural history. Willi will crop up time and time again and greets you at the start, ‘Welcome to the Volcanic Eifel!’
