Does a relaxing holiday in the Valley of the Mountain Pastures sound like a perfect getaway? The Grossarl Valley in Austria is the right destination for you. In the Pongau district, 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of Salzburg, you hike through one of the longest Tauern valleys. On the way, there are 40 cosy alpine huts that give the valley its nickname. The scent of blooming mountain meadows, crystal-clear mountain lakes, alpine roses soaking up the warm mountain sun, and breathtaking panoramas over the Hohe Tauern National Park accompany you on your hikes.

In this Collection, we present six hikes on which you can experience the wonderful huts first hand in what is arguably the best hiking region in the Salzburger Land region. With the National Park municipality of Hüttschlag and the village of Grossarl, the Grossarl Valley rightly deserves the title ‘the Valley of Mountain Pastures.’ It truly is a unique valley in the Salzburger Land region.

In the valley, there are 40 alpine huts where you can enjoy panoramic views and homemade delicacies such as sour cheese and fresh milk, which are typical in the valley. Following marked hiking trails, you walk around 400 kilometres (248 miles). With each step, you will fall more in love with this beautiful region.

The hikes presented here are 4 to 12 kilometres (2.5 to 7.5 miles) long and are suitable for a range of abilities from beginners to sure-footed hikers, depending on the trail conditions. You can find the right hike to suit any fitness level. You can even bring your small children and stroller on some of the hikes.

First of all: the Schödersee is the only periodic lake in Grossarltal that only fills up when the snowmelts or after heavy downpours. In summer it often dries out completely due to its underground drainage.
