Boasting one of the largest official trail networks in South Wales, the Afan Valley is a must-visit for all mountain bikers. There’s really something for everyone, with miles upon miles of graded trails from family loops to big days out yielding expansive views and technical, adrenaline-rush descents and features that’ll keep you whooping for joy!

In addition to an interlinking and signposted network of trails, there are two trail centres at either end of the Afan Valley (pronounced A-van). Both have marvellous cafes and bike shops, as well as parking and trail information. You can also find bike hire at the Afan Valley Bike Shed at the Afan Forest Park centre.

The Tours in this Collection range from moderate level blue trails, including the Blue Scar loop, to a number of red-rated (difficult) loops such as White’s Level, Blade and Penhydd. I’ve also included a more XC-orientated Tour from the next valley in Resolven up and over into the Afan Valley, taking in more fire roads and a short descent on the Rhigos.

If you’re taking the whole family, the green-rated Rookie trail is great for kids to build up confidence and there’s a skills park to session on too.

For experienced riders seeking a real challenge, the black rated (severe) W2 loop covers a mighty 29 miles (46.5 km), taking in sections of trails from both centres up and down the valley, and handily visiting the Glyncorrwg centre half-way around for refreshments!

You’ll need a mountain bike to ride most of these trails. If you don’t have one of your own, you can enquire about hiring a bike at the Afan Valley Bike Shed. Hardtail, full suspension or even rigid, that’s up to you.

To get to the Afan Valley, the easiest way is to drive. There is plentiful pay and display parking at both trail centres. If you’re travelling by train, the nearest station is at Port Talbot. With so many trails to explore, why not make your trip into a weekend getaway or even longer? You’ll find a great deal of accommodation with mountain bikers in mind in the Afan Valley, as well as campsites like the one at the Glyncorrwg trail centre.
