The former summer dike used to make sure that the agricultural fields to your right were not flooded during floods. In 2014, however, the dike was opened in two places as part of the project "Living Rivers", so that the Urdenbacher Altrhein could recapture nature. And this is very successful, as evidenced by the breathtaking floodplain landscape to the left and right of the well-developed hiking trail that runs over the dyke today.

You will be accompanied by a never-ending bird symphony: swans, rust geese, gray herons, golden oriole and kingfisher have found a home in the Urdenbacher Kämpe and can be seen or heard from the various vantage points along the route. It's easy to forget that just a few kilometers away, the center of NRW's second largest city with the longest bar in the world awaits visitors!

The fact that you can walk in the Kämpe in the midst of nature, is due to a flood: earlier flowed at this point nor the Rhine to the Netherlands. After a flood in 1374, however, this shifted his bed a few miles to the west and left only a small trickle that has since marked the border of the Urdenbacher Kämpe.
