Ticino MTB Relay Ride 2020 – powered by komoot

Mountain Biking Collection by Ticino Turismo

A biking vacation in Ticino in Switzerland can be described in one word: breathtaking. This is true for the beautiful mountain and hilly landscape as well as for the numerous trails and experiences waiting for you and your mountain bike. On two wheels, you discover the gentle banks of picturesque rivers and lakes, cross deep valleys and work your way up to the high peaks of the region's spectacular mountains. Together with your family and friends, you are sure to have an unforgettable time. Well – usually you’d have fun together – but sometimes that’s just not possible. This Collection is the result of an idea to defy Corona and have a great time together regardless, even if we can’t do it at the same time.

The idea is a kind of relay ride: The six komoot Pioneers Beat (komoot.de/user/193412189424), Moelipesche (komoot.de/user/276753923394), cadillac55555 (komoot.de/user/646385096062), Roger (komoot. de/user/41409704156), Rolf (komoot.de/user/103043249705) and Thilo (komoot.de/user/thilokraemer) ride six Tours – not at the same time, but one after the other. Where one Tour ends, the next one begins. This makes for a great stage ride through Ticino which can be easily followed. You have the choice to choose a stage every day or pick a single Tour - it depends on what you prefer and whatever fits your schedule. And, of course, all the Tours in this Collection are also fun when you’re not alone. Together with good friends or family, they’re even more fun.

Komoot Pioneer Beat (komoot.de/user/193412189424) had the idea for our “Season Collection” and that's why he's starting this route. Stage 1 leads over 40 kilometers from Sonvico to Rivera and what awaits you here, we summarize with a small quota from Beat: "It's a trail pleasure that doesn't end and our facial expressions constantly switch between grinning and amazement".Right at the start of this tour, things really get down to business: around ten kilometers of uphill are waiting for you. You pedal from around 600 meters up to around 1,600 and you will be rewarded with the finest panoramic views. In addition, you have already managed the thickest chunk of the tour - from now on flowing trail enjoyment, great views and at the end a long descent await you. After you have rested for a while and enjoyed the great view, it goes on. The tunnels of your bike briefly plow Italian soil, while you leave Monte Cucco on the left and head for Passo San Lucio instead. The cozy hut up here is a great opportunity for a little break before a really nice trail with a breathtaking panorama awaits you.At Cima Moncucco, it goes up to another pass, which is also the highest point of the tour at 1,680 meters. There is nothing here, except for the wonderful tranquility and a world-class view all the way to Lake Lugano. In addition, the anticipation increases immeasurably here: not far, then the long descent down to Rivera begins. It's really tough and sometimes it's quite technical.Tips for getting here:
By SBB to Lugano and from there on by bus 461 to Sonvico Sasselo.

On stage 2, komoot user Moelipesche (komoot.de/user/276753923394) takes the lead and takes you from Rivera to Lugano. Right at the beginning you have the choice: You can make the way up to Alpe Foppa on your own, or you can use the mountain railway instead, which saves you around 1,000 meters in altitude and a lot of time.At the top, you can expect a magnificent view. A short detour to the Cappella Santa Maria Degli Angeli is worthwhile: It is an architectural masterpiece and the perfect occasion for a souvenir photo. You can also take a deep breath here, because there is a steep climb towards the antenna on La Manèra, which can be seen from afar. Once at the top, a breathtaking view of Ticino is waiting for you. After a coffee in the Capanna Tamaro, it's downstairs and straight to the point. The following Tamaro Trail has it all. At first it leads over steep stairs and is hardly mobile. Even after that, it remains quite challenging, but becomes increasingly rideable if you have very good bike skills. If not, you just slide. It's worth it, because afterwards it will be wonderfully flowing. But be careful: Challenging root passages or higher heels that require full concentration will surprise you again and again. After the Alpe la Bassa there is a section that is absolutely typical of the area. “You can't get more Ticino Bike”, says Moelipesche about this passage. Beautiful chestnut forests alternate with technical rock passages, both together conjure up a big grin on your face. “This trail is just a dream. The corners of the mouth almost come together at the back of the head because of the sheer smiley face. ”It goes on and on until you finally reach the picturesque Ticino village of Arosio. It's absolutely idyllic here and there is nothing here except a well where you can fill up your water supplies. After the village, another trail awaits you, which leads towards Cademario and spits you out after a short asphalt passage directly on the next trail to Cimo. In the end it gets really demanding again: Between Cimo and Agno there is a nasty steep section that you better leave behind on foot. But as the saying goes: if you love your bike, you push ...Now you are back in civilization. It is not far to the Lugano train station. Your tour ends here and you are spoiled for choice: return home by train? Or would you prefer another stage of our beautiful bike relay?

Stage 3 of our Tucino relay ride is extremely varied: You start in the Mediterranean flair of Lugano, cycle through the alleys and streets of the suburbs and out onto the Ticino trails. You will finally reach the Ticino capital, Bellinzona, through beautiful forests, over panoramic elevations and, of course, great trails. The sponsor of this tour is komoot user "cadillac55555" (komoot.de/user/646385096062).It starts at the Lugano train station and if you have just arrived, it is definitely worth taking a short detour to the center of the city and the banks of the picturesque Lake Lugano before you set off. But you also get a bit of the Italian way of life, because first you drive for a while through the streets of Lugano, which gradually get smaller, until after about five kilometers the asphalt under your tires turns into loose trail ground. Now it really starts! On a simple trail you first head for the medieval Torre di Redde, whose old walls are a good reason for a little break, before you continue slightly downhill to the village of Tesserete. If you still need supplies, this is a great opportunity to replenish your supplies. Then you take a steep path in your sights on the Alpe di Zalto. On the way you always have a good view of Monte Tamaro, which towers between you and Lake Maggiore.A nice descent takes you to Isone before the next ascent is waiting for you. If you keep your eyes open, you can always discover some creepy relics from WW1. Or you let your gaze wander into the distance: From time to time you can already see your stage destination there: Bellinzona. The "landing approach" there takes you over an old mule track and could hardly be more beautiful. Only when you cross the railroad tracks and the motorway is the natural idyll in the mountains over. But now it is not far and the closer you get to the city center of Bellinzona, the better you can see its “skyline” with the three of the best preserved medieval castles in Switzerland, which are even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once you have reached your destination, it is really worth taking a little more time to take in the many sights, the narrow corners and alleys and the bitter charm of the city.Tips for arrival / departure:
If you only want to drive our relay trip in sections, that's no problem at all. The train connection between Bellinzona and Lugano is perfect: the train will take you back to the starting point of the tour in just half an hour.

Komoot user Roger (komoot.de/user/414097041566) takes you on stage 4 of our Ticino MTB relay. Roger actually wanted to go to the Maggia valley, but since it had rained, he spontaneously decided to do this flat and relaxed “culture” circuit to the river delta of the Maggia. After three demanding days in the mountains, such a little rest is definitely welcome in this collection. So get on your bike and look forward to slippery bike paths, the beautiful old town of the holiday resort Locarno and the picturesque Maggia delta with a great view of Lake Maggiore. The tour begins with a relaxing drive through the beautiful old town of Bellinzona. Since you are making fast progress today, you can still spend some time here and treat yourself to a coffee or an ice cream before continuing. When you leave the city, you will soon reach the banks of the Ticino, which you follow for a while on a beautiful bike path. If you drive past Locarno airport, it is not far to the Italian-speaking holiday resort. When you arrive in Locarno, you will be greeted with a great view of Lake Maggiore. Along its shore you roll over a beautiful (bike) path with a panoramic view. Here it is worthwhile to simply park the bike and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere for a while - maybe with a delicious ice cream. Now you roll on. Passing various parks you reach the Maggia, which you cross over a small bridge to finally reach its confluence with Lake Maggiore. It's especially nice here when the sun goes down - maybe your timing is right? On the way back, the tour leads across the impressive market square of Locarno, where you are guaranteed to find a nice restaurant where you can strengthen yourself and end the day.Tip:
If you don't want to stay in Locarno, you can take the train back to the starting point of the tour in Bellinzona very quickly (only takes around 30 minutes).

Stage 5 begins and ends in Locarno, where komoot user Roger hands over the baton to Rolf (komoot.de/user/103043249705), who has explored the mountains west of Locarno on this beautiful round trip. The good, old Enduro principle applies: First you cycle up simple, paved and mostly even asphalted mountain roads, and then you can enjoy really good, sometimes demanding trails in the middle of the mountains. The tour starts in the middle of Locarno. From here you first take a course for the shores of Lake Maggiore with the splendid lake promenade of Ascona. It is the perfect warm-up program with a Mediterranean atmosphere and various opportunities to start your trip in style with a coffee. But as soon as you leave Ascona behind you, chilling is over. Now an uphill stretch of more than ten kilometers lies ahead of you, which slowly but surely takes you higher and higher over narrow mountain roads until you finally reach the highest point of the tour at around 1,300 meters. Time to get off the road and take the trail that bends to the left! From now on, it's not just your legs that have something to do, your head too: The crisp trail to the idyllic mountain village of Rasa is peppered with challenging carpets of roots and all kinds of rocky passages and requires your full attention. Nevertheless, the ride here is quite flowy - it's a great mix of different levels of difficulty and occasional sliding sections.Behind Rasa, the route is then blocked for a while, so that you have to descend again and again in the finest "Bike & Hike" fashion. But that's just part of a mountain tour and you can also enjoy the wonderful landscape much better on two legs. At the latest when you see the Palagnedra reservoir, it will be much more relaxed again. You are now driving into the picturesque Centovalli valley and following the Melezza river via various roads and paths back to Locarno. “An all-round great tour”, Rolf is sure of that!

Stage 6 of our beautiful relay trip sets off a real trail fireworks display, fueled by komoot user Thilo Kraemer, who takes you on this 31-kilometer circuit that starts in Locarno and takes you to Cadenazzo.Even if a first glance at the altitude profile makes you shudder, the tour starts very relaxed. Because the rather nasty-looking climb right at the beginning is not your responsibility, but that of the gondola. This comfortably transports you and your bike to the Cardada before the chairlift takes you up to Locarno's local mountain, the 1,671 meter high Cimetta. Phew - around 1,300 vertical meters saved!Once at the top, you can first take a deep breath and inhale the fresh mountain air with the best view - then you sit on your bike and look forward to an enjoyable tour in freeride style: With a few exceptions, it's only downhill today. The main protagonist of the day is the Cardada Trail, which gives you flowing mountain biking pleasure, but requires your full attention because of its loose surface and sheer length. The trail leads you down to Val Resa and on to Contra, where you can treat yourself to a break and refreshment. You have now left the demanding part of this tour behind you.Past the Lago di Vogorno, a reservoir, you roll out more or less and at the end of the tour and the Ticino MTB relay you can once again enjoy the wonderful landscape of Ticino. Satisfied and exhausted, you finally arrive at the train station in Cadenazzo, from where you can start your journey home in a relaxed manner.
