Nine Hanseatic cities, nine pearls in the east of the Netherlands
© Hanzesteden Marketing
The Netherlands’ nine Hanseatic cities have managed to keep their medieval flair to this day. Doesburg, Zutphen, Deventer, Hattem, Zwolle, Hasselt, Kampen, Elburg and Harderwijk – each retains its unique charm and character. Beautiful historic town centres, modern shops, rustic harbours, trendy cafés and a varied culture make the Hanseatic cities particularly attractive destinations.
In this Collection, you will find nine bicycle Tours around the Hanseatic cities. You will cycle over high dykes that offer an almost endless view of the lush green meadows along the meandering rivers. Wonderful cycling routes await you, leading from Hanseatic city to Hanseatic city through picturesque, vibrant landscapes.
From relaxed half-day Tours that afford plenty of time to enjoy the landscape and culture, to challenging longer routes, this Collection offers a variety of possibilities for planning your own trip through the Hanseatic Cities. Whether it is a weekend excursion into the cultural landscape criss-crossed by canals and dykes or an extended cycling holiday – the individual Tours can be combined individually as they often follow similar routes along the canals.
The Hanseatic city of Zwolle, for example, is an ideal base for a few short trips: there are four circular routes in the immediate vicinity – perfect for an active weekend. If you want to follow the full Hanseatic programme, you can start in Zutphen in the south. If you adjust the routes a little, they can all be combined into one big Tour from here.
The Hanseatic cities have excellent culinary delights: Deventer is famous for its herb cakes, which are baked in the historic city according to a 600-year tradition – the ideal provision during your ride. Thanks to the proximity of the coast, many restaurants serve the freshest seafood. And, if you are in the mood for something savoury, you can of course go for a delicious portion of chips with peanut sauce!

The circuit between Deventer and Zwolle runs largely parallel to the LF3 route, which you can also find in this collection. If you have decided on Zwolle as the starting point for your tours through the Hanseatic cities, you can do the round as a day tour by moving the starting point. If, on the other hand, you combine all the routes into one long bike tour, this tour is also ideal as a return trip along the IJssel.

On the 113-kilometer long-distance bike route, which you can ride in two stages, for example, you go from Hanseatic city to Hanseatic city. The tour begins in Hasselt and takes you to Doesburg on flat terrain, following the beautiful IJssel. The path from north to south leads you along long dykes along the river, from which you have a beautiful view of the wide flat land, which enchants with its lush green meadows.
This bike tour takes you on a 40-kilometer circuit from Deventer to Zutphen and back. It is mainly about exposed bike paths and meandering dykes. On the route you cycle along one of the most beautiful rivers in the Netherlands: the IJssel. During the Hanseatic era, the river brought wealth and prosperity because it connected the open sea with the German hinterland.
From the Hanseatic city of Hasselt, this bike tour takes you in an easy circuit over 25 kilometers around the Zwartewater river. From Hasselt you first drive a little bit south, then turn in a large arc to the north. On the way to Zwartsluis you cycle on the flat route past lush green meadows and wide fields, which are criss-crossed by innumerable dead straight canals.
