The Ammerland Route takes you through the unique park landscapes of the Ammerland, a historic region in western Germany. You ride along beautiful cycle paths past blooming rhododendrons, through idyllic meadows, fields lined with picturesque trees, and magical forests where silence and nature surrounds you. In the heart of this dreamlike landscape lies the Zwischenahner Meer, a lake which is the shimmering pearl of the Ammerland.
The Ammerland Route is a 170-kilometre (105-mile) circular that takes you through this pretty park landscape in three stages. In this Collection, I recommend starting in the town of Rastede, but you can start anywhere along the route. You can easily reach Rastede with the Regional Express train as the town is located on the Wilhelmshaven-Osnabrück line and also has direct connections to Bremen. You can also conveniently begin your adventure from the towns of Bad Zwischenahn, Ocholt and Augustfehn, which also have train stations.
From Rastede, you cycle clockwise through the picturesque landscapes. You can enjoy the wonderful nature to the fullest as you ride along paths that are so flat, that your bike will almost roll by itself.
You will find a good choice of accommodation in all stage destinations en route, from hotels and guesthouses to holiday apartments. Your stomach is also well catered for with plenty of places to stop for food either in a town or village, or in the idyllic countryside. You can tuck into Ammerland specialities at cosy restaurants and rustic farmhouse cafes en route. With a full stomach, visiting magnificent gardens and parks of blooming flowers is even more fun.
