Cycling through unique park landscapes – Ammerland Route

Bike Touring Collection by Johanna

The Ammerland Route takes you through the unique park landscapes of the Ammerland, a historic region in western Germany. You ride along beautiful cycle paths past blooming rhododendrons, through idyllic meadows, fields lined with picturesque trees, and magical forests where silence and nature surrounds you. In the heart of this dreamlike landscape lies the Zwischenahner Meer, a lake which is the shimmering pearl of the Ammerland.

The Ammerland Route is a 170-kilometre (105-mile) circular that takes you through this pretty park landscape in three stages. In this Collection, I recommend starting in the town of Rastede, but you can start anywhere along the route. You can easily reach Rastede with the Regional Express train as the town is located on the Wilhelmshaven-Osnabrück line and also has direct connections to Bremen. You can also conveniently begin your adventure from the towns of Bad Zwischenahn, Ocholt and Augustfehn, which also have train stations.

From Rastede, you cycle clockwise through the picturesque landscapes. You can enjoy the wonderful nature to the fullest as you ride along paths that are so flat, that your bike will almost roll by itself.

You will find a good choice of accommodation in all stage destinations en route, from hotels and guesthouses to holiday apartments. Your stomach is also well catered for with plenty of places to stop for food either in a town or village, or in the idyllic countryside. You can tuck into Ammerland specialities at cosy restaurants and rustic farmhouse cafes en route. With a full stomach, visiting magnificent gardens and parks of blooming flowers is even more fun.

It is worth taking a long break in the health resort. Then you cycle on with new energy and dive back into the idyllic park landscape at the gates of the city. On a completely flat route, you roll in playful loops over Edewecht to the stage destination Apen. Here you can end the day with a visit to the ham museum. From them you have a great view over the river meadow landscape. Then you drive a loop south to the Nordloher Tief and on the way back you pass the Ader Tief again. After you have crossed the village of Augustfehn, you cycle through the typical park landscape towards the northeast. On the way you pass rustic farms, country cafes and rest areas, where you can take leisurely breaks. You will reach Westerstede about ten kilometers before the end of the stage. Before you set up camp here for the night, you cycle a nice dangling south. Here you dive into the wild and romantic Holtriede forest, which is also crossed by the Westerstede-Ocholt draisine route. Behind the forest, the meadows and fields of the park landscape welcome you again. Shortly before you reach Westerstede for the second time, you can overlook colorful rhododendrons from the landscape window, an observation tower. When you arrive back in Westerstede, you have the opportunity to end the day with a handcar ride in the summer months - if you still have strength in your legs. Then you can indulge yourself in one of the many restaurants with Ammerland specialties. You will find numerous hotels and holiday apartments for overnight stays in Westerstede.
