The wild beauty of the trees, the magic of untouched nature, islands of tranquillity far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – you can experience all this on a hike in Germany’s Black Forest National Park. Within an area of more than 10,000 hectares (24,700 ac), the forest is allowed to remain utterly wild and the motto here is ‘Let nature be nature’.
From the rare three-toed woodpecker to the adder – there’s room for everyone in the national park. The fastest bird in the world, the peregrine falcon, is just as much at home here as Europe's smallest owl, the pygmy owl. Trees that usually reach only a third of their natural age in commercial forests are allowed to grow several hundred years old here, until they make way for subsequent generations.
Over 10,000 animal species and countless plant varieties are thought to live in the park. When you walk through the forests, it seems as if the ground is alive and the air is full of mysterious sounds. You learn to look, listen and become still. Those who succeed in doing so will be rewarded with stunning experiences: a glimpse of a woodpecker or the call of an eagle owl penetrating through the darkness of the trees.
