4 Ways You Can Use Komoot’s Map Layers to Plan a Better Route

March 13, 2024

When you first open the route planner on komoot, you’ll be offered the “standard” komoot map experience. It has all the normal map stuff like roads, forests, and bodies of water. But did you know you can supercharge your route planning by selecting additional information to be displayed on the map?  Here are four ways you can get more from your route planning by tapping into some of komoot’s mapping features.

  1. Shortcut the logistics research by including Points of Interest on the map Bike repair shops, public transport hubs, e-bike chargers (and more). By enabling “Places” on the komoot map (tap the “search” field), you create a shortcut to adventure by eliminating extra research. Enable the places relevant to you to quickly see where the strategic ones are and plan your route around them.

  2. Get a realistic feel for the environment (and cross-check old or remote trails) with the Google satellite map Planning a ride in a lesser-trodden part of the world? Heard the area you want to hike has iffy map coverage? Cross-check the area by applying the Google satellite map in the planner. Not only will it confirm which routes actually exist*, but you’ll also get a more realistic feel for the environment you’re heading into.  *Komoot gets its mapping data from Open Street Map (OSM), a volunteer-run platform that does occasionally get it wrong, especially in less popular areas. This article explains how OSM data affects komoot’s routing.

  3. Plan a route that matches your skill level and interest with Trail View Trail View does what it says on the box. Enable this feature and you’ll get photos of the trail – no people, no buildings, no dogs or cows, just trail. Use it to see the trail for yourself and decide if it’s one you’ll feel confident on and enjoy using.  Important side note: Trail View is only available if planning your route on web and you need to be logged in to your komoot account to use it.

  4. Include an area’s best bits on your route using community Highlights When you first open the route planner, Highlights are automatically enabled. These are the red dots on the map representing the community’s favorite places, plus their tips and advice for making the most of said places. Include Highlights on your route to get in on the good stuff!
